“I’m here to be fitted for a tuxedo,” Mitchell told the woman behind the desk at the bridal salon.

“My name is Marsha. I’m so happy to help.” The woman’s smile extended to Arleigh. “Do you already have your gown?”

“I… um…” What, exactly, was the woman’s question? Realization flooded Arleigh, along with heat to her face. “It’s just him. For his brother’s wedding.”

“Ah, I see.” The light on Marsha’s face dimmed a little. “Do you have an appointment?”

“Yes. Mitchell Ackerman.”

She scanned the leather-bound book in front of her. “Here you are. Please come this way.” She smiled back at Arleigh. “Have a look around if you like. We have dresses for every occasion. We’ll only be a few minutes.”

Arleigh didn’t need a dress for Treyan and Brittany’s wedding. Oh, she’d received an invitation, but she’d already sent in her regrets weeks ago. It wasn’t like Brittany was so close a friend that Arleigh would travel out of town for her wedding.

Of course, that was then. Things had changed, at least somewhat, but not enough that Arleigh was ready to crash the wedding. That’s what it felt like. Brittany would not care or even notice that Arleigh wasn’t present. Not when she had a huge family of her own and many friends in Spokane.

Arleigh settled onto a velvet loveseat and pulled Hudson down with her.

“I wanna see stuff.”

“It’s all fancy dresses for weddings. And shoes and jewelry. Nothing for little boys.” Nothing for permanently single women, either. But if she didn’t have charge over a small child who could whirl through this space like the cartoon version of a Tasmanian devil, destroying everything in his path, she’d be inclined to poke and dream a little on her own.

She was crazy. She’d been dating Mitchell Ackerman for what, three days? And they hadn’t even gone on a date. Today sure didn’t count, not with Hudson in tow. And already she was dreaming in a bridal shop, wondering what style of gown would suit her figure the best and bring tears to Mitchell’s eyes as he watched her come toward him?

The whole idea was dumb. He’d already been married. He’d already awaited the bride of his heart. They’d been a happy little family before Lindsay contracted cancer.

What made Arleigh think she deserved to step into Lindsay’s place with her man and her boys? To have all the trappings of a wedding, a marriage, a home?

Arleigh was too messy for that. She had… issues. Abandonment issues, for starters. God hadn’t deserted her, just Dad. But wasn’t God male? She rubbed her temples.

Hudson sprang out of her grasp and bolted toward a long rack of pristine white dresses.

“Hudson, don’t touch!” She jolted to her feet and dashed after him. “You come back here!”

He ran his hand along the row as he darted away from her. “They feel funny!”

Arleigh grabbed him just as his fingers closed around a feathered number. And when he pulled away, several plumes were in his grasp… no longer attached to the gown.

“Hudson!” she hissed.
